Virginia Trip 2014 Part 2

After leaving the Green's Doug and I drove into Washington DC. which was only about an hour and a half away.

We saw the capitol building. It is called capitol hill because it is on top of a steep hill. It is the center of Washington DC. You can see everything from here. It was quite a hike. Especially in 101 degree heat.

A pool of water in front of the capitol building.

The dome was under construction.

We took a guided tour.

The flags were 1/2 mast on July 1st. Not sure why.

The White House.

Proof we were here. : ) Sarah was with us on the 2nd day.

The view of the Washington Monument from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The Lincoln Memorial.

There were lots of steps, everywhere. : )

The Smithsonian Castle. There are actually 4 building to the Smithsonian.  We only saw the inside of 1 of them.  There were so many things to see and do.  We only got to visit a few things.

We rode the train into the city rather than driving, which was a first for us.

Inside one of the underground train stations. Depending on who our driver was for our particular train. We had to be quick. When our stops came, the doors came open and you needed to board quickly and get off quickly, and try not to get separated. Because as you are getting off others are pushing to get on.  Doug was shut in the doors trying to get in at one stop as he was trying to let another lady get on.  Then one of the trains we were riding was having mechanical difficulties and  left us in underground station we did not intend to get off at. So we learned to switch from train to train to get to where we were going. Public transportation was interesting, people in general are very interesting as well. We spent the day with many different nationalities, religions, languages, and every level of society.  Very different from our small farming town.
